Entry 2-6-8-7

The very bitey kind

From the beginning of the race, all the way back when the barriers of their purgatory were cracked open, most Vampyres have wanted to sustain the purity of their bloodline. The Crypts of Decay are the form of purgatory where all souls go when they die. When a soul is sent to the Crypts, they are then judged. Upon their judgement, they either sleep eternally in the Crypts, or are sent to the Eternal Rebirth to be in peace. The Vampyres were once living souls that expected to sleep eternally in their purgatory. The God of Death put them in their current form as a way to thin the herds of the living world through their feeding. Like many of his other 'projects', Asuan quickly abandoned the idea and moved along, stranding these creations among the legions of the undead. For this reason, many older Vampyres despise the God of Death and anything that he does or creates. This makes them quite cross with other undead beings or those who worship Asuan, even in the slightest form. They very quickly began to look for a way out of their prison and found it when the doors to their purgatory guided them to freedom.

By the time the Vampyres were free from the Crypts of Decay, the civilizations of Alaris had already begun to bud, and they quickly realized they would not be able to sustain their lives with the sun that blistered down upon Atrisea. It was hard to find many sources of food there. Every being stayed on edge at night because of the Carran threat, making it impossible without brute force. They could have forced themselves upon their victims to feed, but many of them refused to do so for one reason or another. Some viewed it against their morals, some didn't want to expend the effort, and others felt there were easier ways to achieve their goals. They did survive for long enough to free themselves from Atrisea, but it wasn't without some hunger and some slain beings whose killers were scorned for their actions.

Blending within the masses of people somehow, the allure of the Vampyres kept them safe enough that they could travel north. The land of Ertoba was their goal. Sailing north took them to the dark marshes that covered Ertoba, the Vampyres began to disperse across the landmass to be less of a target. This is how the original covens were made, though they were ramshackle and broke apart in small periods of time. This is truly where the split of pure blood vampyres occurred. There are many still who believe that pure blood Vampyres should stay pure, and not procreate with other races. Vampyres who were humans or other races that were turned are considered abhorrent to them. There were others who used their opportunities to change willing humans and procreate, creating two completely separate sets of beings. A pureblood Vampyre will have increased physical capabilities over their mixed-blood brethren, yet the mixed-blood Vampyres will have so much more diversity and room to grow. For a Vampyre to breed with another race, they must change their partner into one of their own. Otherwise, the pregnancy will not take, or it will end in miscarriage. The two anatomies are incompatible and the mother's body will reject the fetus.

Most Vampyres are found in Ertoba in modern times. The deep caverns of the country allow for the Vampyres to explore the depths and be safe from the powerful sun of Alaris. There are some who have become accepted in Terris, but most places still shun them for their undead nature. Whereas the number of Purebloods once outnumbered the mixed-bloods, there are few families of Purebloods that still thrive today. There are ideas that there are more Vampyres that are forming in the Crypts of Decay, and that havent have the chance to escape into Alaris like the rest have.
