Frequently Asked Questions

How does Necromancy/The Afterlife/Death work?

On Alaris, when the soul leaves the body, it is judged by the God of Death. If Asuan judges in one way, the body is sent to the land of the gods, Alavaria. Upon the grand heights of Prism Mountain, the soul will travel through the prisms and make its journey to the afterlife. The other option is the Crypts of Decay, Alaris' purgatory. They will be subject to eternal sleep among the legions of dead and souls that lurk in the endless and ever growing catacombs.

Necromancy can only be done on those beings who have a connection to the Crypts, as they are judged unworthy by Asuan and not deserving of eternal peace for one reason or another. This just happens to be most souls. The other option is Vampyres, who were created in the Crypts and escaped into the world of the living.

The necromancer returns the soul to the body and returns the body to some form of life. The only exception are Vampyres, who lack souls. When a Vampyre dies, they fade away into nothingness, leaving the empty shell behind. The usefulness and ability of a corpse is directly tied to how skill the necromancer that raised them is. By default, the body will lack memory of who they were or what they knew while they were alive, will be in the same shape physically that they were when they died or worse, and will not be able to be commanded by the one who raised them. These qualities can vary vastly depending on the skill in question. The number of corpses that can be risen at once also is based on the skill of the necromancer. There are many tools that can be used for necromancy. One example is the former Death Priest of Asuan, who uses panpipes enchanted with magic used to perform necromancy.

How do people get to Alaris?

Unlike some worlds, there are many ways to get to this planet. You have your normal ways, like teleportation magic and space travel (If a race is advanced enough to pull that off.) Then there are things more intriguing that can be used to get here. The reference can be made to the Layers Between Worlds, the fabric of all realities that interlaces all worlds. (There is a lore entry on the layers between worlds if one is interested.) By finding where the worlds intersect could allow one to step between them, so to speak. It is similar to interweaving the pages of two books. There is a very evident link between another dimension and Alaris. The other known method is rather curious. There are several accounts of entities being randomly teleported to Alaris from other places. There is speculation on some tie to some god of mischief that has taken residence on the planet somewhere, someone who delights in drawing others in for their own joy and entertainment. There are no official accounts of this claim, however.

Do we have to put more than one major or minor skill? Do we have to use the template provided?

The information you need to provide can vary. Most of the time it is preferred that all of the sheet is filled out, if the information is quality and it makes sense that you omit that information, you may leave it out. You may also come back later and edit it if you have to, as long as you inform staff.

As far as the template goes, the template can be flexible or have another template entirely if you make sure all of the information is still present. We have several people that dont use our template, and that can work out just fine. We prefer people to use google docs for their bios, however.

Do we have to read all of the lore?

Ideally, yes. Reading the lore provides you with the information you need on the world and how best to interact with it. However! You do not need to read every section at once in order to make your character. As long as you read it at some point and make an effort to understand it, you can go at your own pace.
