Alaris
Entry 2-6-8-2
The maddening sickness
The first thing to clarify is that the Corruption is more like a radiation than a magical energy. It has a majority of forms, though often it is a purple vapor or a strange purple sludge. The radiation has mutagenic qualities, though it requires one to have extended contact with it. Even nature and creations formed from natural materials can be warped by the Corruption, making exploration in those places quite unnerving at times. (See the barks of trees becoming like flesh in affected areas.)
The mutations start with simple warping of cells, moving on to changing the shape and form of certain body parts, to the tail end when it literally changes the fabric of that being. The Daevaris were once Maiyaris, which is a common piece of information. What many do not know, is the history that led to that point.
When the world was young, Atrisea was a place of incredible diversity and growth. Races from all over the world came to settle there in the city of the Opulent King, and they basked in his glow and the wonderful things he did to make Alaris as a whole a better place. What happened next is what most already know. Bariace was cast down from above, striking the ground and wiping out the landmass with an explosive wave. It left most of the continent scarred and burnt, mutated beyond any recognition. The races of the cities of Atrisea were either killed on the spot, or they became one of the terrifying Carran in order to survive.
For a long time, there was nothing heard from Atrisea. No boats coming or going to the continent, nobody reporting back what they learned. The truth was that the original Carran were forced into a deep slumber, where their bodies adapted to the mutations that the intense amount of Corruption caused. They would never be who they were again, and it was purely the fault of the gods that were supposed to protect Alaris. Eventually, when beings did return, a good portion of them were exposed and became the first Inflicted.
The major issue was the Carran and the serious threat that they represent. When a body passes the point of no return and then some, the mutation begins to create horrible extra features with the excess of radiation in their cells. If a person becomes Corrupted, there is the chance that they can be saved. Purification magics like powerful earth or light magic can burn the Corruption away, even if it is extremely painful. The intensity needed depends on how heavily they were Corrupted.
There is a point, however, where this can no longer be done. At that point, they become Inflicted. The next stage is Carran, if they continue to mutate. Sometimes the radiation will animate the corpse, mutating the dead cells back to life. The previously dead Carran are noticeably more hungry for flesh.
